S16-02 NEES Collaboratory Innovations in Research Methods

Description:

The NEES Consortium, Inc. (NEESinc) was incorporated in 2004 to operate and maintain a national collaboratory in earthquake engineering simulation for a ten-year operation period (2005-2014). NEES is a shared national network of 15 experimental facilities, collaborative tools, a centralized data repository, and earthquake simulation software, all linked by ultra-high-speed Internet2 connections. Together, these resources provide the means for collaboration and discovery in the form of more advanced research based on experimentation and computational simulations of the ways buildings, bridges, utility systems, coastal regions, and geomaterials perform during seismic events.
This second special NEES session, entitled “NEES Innovations in Research Methods,” will present a selection of technological innovations employed to conduct research at NEES facilities. The session will highlight how these advances expand the scope and/or impact of research that can be conducted. Topics will include technical innovations used for research collaboration across distance and time, improved experimental measurements and/or controls, advanced simulation and visualization capabilities, and the development of IT infrastructure and tools.
Examples of the possible talks are as follows:

  • A Researcher's Experience with Telepresence Tools
  • Analysis of Actuator Delay Compensation Methods for Real-Time Testing
  • A Data Model for Large-Scale Structural Laboratory Experiments
  • Large-Scale 4-Span Bridge Model Studies using Shake Tables and Hybrid Systems
  • Improving Simulation Capabilities of OpenSEES Using Tests on Concrete Walls
  • Simulation of a Soil Model-Model Container-Centrifuge Shaking Table System
  • High Impact EOT Activities for Earthquake Engineers
  • NEESinc EOT Initiatives and Collaborative Opportunities
  • Parameterization Framework for Model Updating Applications in OpenSEES
  • Rapid Local and Geographically Distributed Hybrid Simulations
  • Dynamic Testing Protocol for Nonstructural Partition Walls and Medical Equipment
  • A Vision for IT in NEES: Task Group on IT Vision
  • State-of-the-Art 3D Simulation Tools
  • 3D Data Viewing of Physical Models
  • A Validated, Multi-scale Tsunami Model for Hybrid Numerical-Experimental Simulation
  • Distributed Model Updating using Wireless Sensors Integrated within NEES
