S23 Information sharing and educational initiatives for improving global seismic safety

Description:

This special session will focus on programs, initiatives and tools that are being developed to share information to improve global seismic safety. Papers will emphasize how these programs are using the internet to share information, the kinds of tools and information that are being developed, as well as the types of vulnerabilities that are being targeted, such as the seismic resistance of low strength masonry, promotion of alternatives to reinforced concrete non-ductile concrete frames, the performance of stone masonry in past earthquakes and international collaborations among various organizations, institutions and countries.

This session will present some of the initiatives and activities of World Housing Encyclopedia (WHE; www.world-housing.net), a project by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the International Association of Earthquake Engineering. The WHE was launched at the 12th WCEE at Auckland, New Zealand in 2000, and has attracted more than 140 active participants from over 40 countries. At the same time, the session will also include initiatives and ideas presented by other groups with the same interest.
