S24 Dr. Kobori Memorial Session

Description:
Dr. Takuji Kobori, Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University, passed away on 5 September 2007 at the age of 86. He was a pioneer and innovator in the field of Earthquake Engineering, and made significant contributions to IAEE as an Executive Committee member from 1988 to 1996 and an Honorary Member since 1997. He was responsible for many innovative developments and achievements in the fields of soil-structure interaction, inhomogeneous ground response, nonlinear and random vibration, and structural response control. He recently endeavored to integrate earthquake engineering with seismology and exerted leadership in the fields of decision making under uncertainty, risk management, progressive collapse of structures, and social and economic effects of natural disasters.
This session is intended to provide an overview perspective of what has been accomplished and what challenges remain in major research areas to which Professor Kobori was devoted. We welcome innovative papers addressing the topics listed and hope for a large active participation in memory of Professor Kobori.
Topics:
1) Inhomogeneous ground response
2) Structural control
3) Integration of seismology and earthquake engineering
4) Progressive collapse of structures
5) Seismic risk management
6) Social and economic effects of natural disasters
7) Other perspective
