S25 From Kyoto to Beijing: 20 years of structural control

Description :

In 1988, professor Kobori organized in Kyoto the first session on Structural Control within a WCEE. Less than 10 years later, the Kobe earthquake occurred as a warning on the potential of smart systems. Nevertheless, the technological development in sensors and actuators  along the last decade requires the scientific community a further update.

This session is intended to provide an overview of the more recent technological innovation and its interaction with seismic engineering practice. The covered topics are:

1) Sensor technology and actuator developments;
2) Semi-active structural control;

3) Hybrid structural control;
4) Integration of structural control and earthquake engineering;
5) Robustness of structures
6) Structural control during  construction
